Bright and early this morning, John and I caught a cab and went to join a bus tour to Normandy.
The bus ride was quite long. I really enjoyed the scenery of the French countryside.
Lots of windmill farms
The village of Normandy was very interesting. I could imagine that it had not been changed very much from the way it looked during WWII.
Our first stop was the D-Day museum. We spent a couple of hour here and then had a traditional Normandy meal Complete with bread pudding. I didn't eat very much, the chicken was dark meat and the bread pudding didn't appeal to me.
After the museum we went to Point Du Hoc. This was very interesting.
A crater from the bombing
Entrance into a German Bunker
The top of the bunker
The view was gorgeous!
Point Du Hoc, where the Allies climbed up to invade
Inside the bunker
The view from the lookout of the bunker
Next we went to Omaha beach
Then Juno beach
Mulberry Harbors put there by the English
Then we went to the cemetery where the Americans who died were buried. I learned that this is American owned and maintained.
Then it was back on the bus for the long trek to Paris. Evidently France has super strict rules about how long bus drivers may drive. We had to stop for 30 min. for the drivers to rest.
It was a very long day. Some of the things I saw, I was grateful to be able to see. Some of the day was incredibly boring. This was on John's bucket list, so I'm glad he got to go. I would never choose to go back there again, but I can say that I saw it. I guess that's something! The next day was on my bucket list....Versailles!
